Point of information: What breaks down is the voltage regulator/brush
assembly

The three-phase rectifier is a different item. Yes, they do fail. I
replaced one on the way to our Kansas City Meet a few years ago. The
same regulator fits many Bosch alternators so I found one at a truck
repair shop.
