Ingrid,
Years since I wrote something here at the mbcoupes list, but reading about
your silent death of the 380SEC, I had to let you know my 2-cents tips:
Both my 280SE and my 420SEC have died like that. And every time it has been
the rectifying unit on the Bosh alternator that had broken down. Its cheap
and simple to replace and its easy to check before you start all the other
correct mentioned control points. To check if it is broken: Jump start the
car from a fully charged battery. If the voltage does not read +14V with a
running engine, but rather lower than 12V, replace the rectifier (with the
brushes). This is in our cold country a known sickness of the very good
Bosch alternator.
I had to let you know, as I from my experience has a new unit in the
glowebox.
