[W126 Coupe] hood latch question

Gary,

If the two Phillips screw bolts have never been removed before you will
probably need an impact driver with properly sized Phillips Head to
break them free. The hand tool I am trying to describe, you hold in one
hand and just set down in place on the screw head and then whack the top
of the tool with a hammer and it backs off the screw bolt? Takes a few
blows.

As for the latch itself, with the bolts removed it will drop down freely
and you can find a way clear of the frame and just take the cable
termination off the latch release lever. Then tank the latch assembly
in parts cleaner for and hour or two and using an old toothbrush (wear
gloves/eye protection) clear all the crud off until its squeaky clean.
Some of the paint will come with the crud. Then test it on a bench for
free movement setting the latch and releasing (watch your fingers) lube
it up with dry lithium grease, atf, oil or whatever. Then re-attach the
cable end and bolt it back into the top radiator support frame. I use
the dry grease as it does not tend to catch as much road crud and freeze
up as quickly. Very common problem on the MB catches after a tough winter.
