Hi Frank, Read this thread, it has a lot of good info.

With you looking for a 69 to 71 you are better off because of the no smog test on cars older than 1976

Read this also.

The problems come when you buy a 1976 or newer model year vehicle from a non-carb state or from out of the country. My car was federalized in California in 1986 and was registered in California from 1986 until 2004 when it went to Oregon. Now I have brought it back into the state and the DMV is making bad noises. I am going to pay the use tax on it and just work on it for a while. Then when I am ready I will transfer the title and get her smogged and registered. Right now ALL California cares about is collecting the use tax. LOL

Since the car is in California already it would be a simple matter to bring the registration current. So it is saleable to a California person but would still have to pass California smog. It is not easy to bring old cars into California due to the smog restrictions. Where ever it moves to it would have to be hauled (I am assuming not operable and not currently registered) on a car carrier. I just moved one 400 miles at a cost of $396. Check with the auto shippers as to cost to move ... you can find them online and some have online quotes.
I add my condolences as well.

I have a question about bringing in cars from other states. I have been shopping for a 1969-1971 280SL "Pagoda" MBZ and it's possible that I might find the best deal out of California where I live. The issue about smog and California licensing has caught my attention. My '89 560SEC has always been a California car so when I bought it, there were no smog/registration concerns. Any help or commentary?
