As jay mentioned, the VIN/Chassis number stayed the same.  AMG would 
stamp some of their own #'s into the quad cam/32V engines and 
occasionally mount up body tags but that's about it.  We have a full two 
full on AMG Hammers in at the moment and aside from the Obvious mods 
there isn't a single # & or body plaque on the entire car to alert you 
to it's AMG-ness.

When you purchased a Mercedes you would send it off to AMG just like any 
other tuner, ie Koenig, Lorinser, Brabus, Carlson, Carat Duchatalet, 
SGS...is all I can think of off the top of my head this morning.

It is difficult to tell @ times if a car was fiddled on by AMG/an AMG 
approved installer w/o documentation.   However, the more options 
installed the greater the chance of the car being a Genuine as opposed 
to a reproduction.  Not many people are swapping in interiors, 32V 
engines, GT diff's, suspension, body kit etc, etc..

AMG would do basically what ever their clients were looking for...the 
limiting factor was how many zero's they were willing to add to the check!
