[W126 Coupe] MBCOUPES Digest, Vol 48, Issue 30

Good Morning Guys,

What would cause an 87' 560 SEL to cut out when idling in DRIVE, then when
going down highway and roll down windows cut down on speed by 5-10 mph? Also
when I adjust a seat.

My independent mechanic and I met today for coffee. I explained your
symptoms. He suggests you check the ignition switch connector where the
harness meets the back of the ignition key assembly. He's seen the behavior
you describe on other MB's and says it's a $20 MB dealer part but, he
charges $200 with labor to do the repair.

Haha. Why? Because if the problem is the ignition switch (the other end of
the ignition/steering lock assembly to which the wiring harness plugs) the
easiest way to get at it on the W126 is to remove the engine and use a torch
to cut holes in the firewalls beside the steering column. And THAT operation
is a piece of cake compared to what is necessary the W124!!

Seriously, I question whether that is the problem. When you turn the
ignition "on" all the dash warning lights light (including the low fuel), right?
That's normal. That's your "test" to see that all your warning lights work.
When you further engage the starter the warning lights will go out when the
engine starts. That's normal.

Question: Do your wipers come "on" when you turn the key to ignition
position, and do they also keep running independently of the wiper switch when the
engine is running? What happens when you actually turn the wipers "on"? (I
have lost your original message, I suspect the wipers still run). What
happens when you switch the wipers to intermittent? What happens when you switch
to fast speed?

Power is provided to the wiper switch (& relay) through the ignition switch
and the wipers will only work when the ignition is "on". The problem is
likely with the wiper switch itself, not the ignition switch. Sounds like your
ignition switch performs perfectly normally and your wiper switch is locked
(broken) "on".

By coincidence actually, we were just talking about how to remove the turn
signal/wiper assembly. Except in your case you have airbags. Unfortunately,
the easiest way to remove the wiper stalk assembly in YOUR car is to remove
the engine and cut the steering shaft off at the steering box .... I'M JUST
KIDDING!!! but DO ask someone about dealing with the airbag equipped
steering wheel... I have had no experience. And DON'T try anything about removing
that steering wheel without fully understanding the procedure!

The curved guide rod may work on the sedan as well, though it is longer than
the straight one for the sedan.

In any case, the curved guide rod is closer to the glass at the top.Regards,

sedan guide rail with my service bits and peices and it has a slight bend near
one end - it was just to figure out which end the bend went - i'll have a

Jon, I installed the electric blind in my SEC. The one I bought was tan and
I had to retrim it in gray. A bit of work, but nothing too demanding. 1. The
kinked rod guide is not for the sedan, it is for the coupe. You can get the
straight rod guide from your local dealer.2. Yes, the spring goes on top of
the toothed guide rod, between the guide rod and the blind pulley.3. No, the
blind is not attached to the rod. It retracts when the rod is lowered. Hope

Hi Everybody, I'm after a bit of info on the rear electric blind for the
W126... I've just been able to find a rear electric blind for my SEL which needs
a bit of repair and a retrim. the blind has come to me in a collection of
bits but I have been able to purchase some missing or broken parts from
mercedes to make it work again but i have 3 questions which i'm hoping somebody can
answer which will stop me taking the blind in my SEC apart. 1. The kink in
the SEL guide rod - does it go at the top or the bottom? 2. I have been given
a spring, which the guide from mercedes goes between the white toothed rod
and the black blind fixing - is this just a buffer or is it supposed to be
attached to the 2 parts? 3. In relation to question 2 - if the blind is not
attached to the rod does the blind automatically retract by the blind's spring

Can someone explain how to remove the gear shift lever (knob)? I got as far
as removing the wood piece around the gear shift; but, no luck in loosening
the two bolts that hold the gear shift laver. How do I get a tool in place

i wasn't trying to get off of the list but somehow i did once and believe it
happen by me putting their email list on my block addresses and they, mb
coupes, asked that if i didn't do something, can't remember now, that they would
remove from the list. they gave me 3 warnings and after the 3rd i got off
and had to re-subscribe.

so the solution, just put them on block and at a minimum you won't get the
emails

There's a great idea and yes just punch the 4-digit code in when prompted
and you are good to go. If you make a mistake it sets a timer and you'll have
to wait it out before punching the code in yet again.

MY W126 STEERING WHEEL WITH A WOODEN ONE. JUST DISENGAGE THE AIRBAG CONNECTOR
UNDER THE PASSENGER FOOTWELL CARPET/RUBBER MAT, UNSCREW THE 2 HEX BOLTS
BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL AND CAREFULLY LIFT AWAY THE AIR BAG COVER. THEN THE
NORMAL STEERING WHEEL BOLT APPEARS.? I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY FOR ADDITIONAL
SAFETY.

09:08:02 +0000Subject: [W126 Coupe] Off Topic (ish) - Electric Rear Blind...

Hi Everybody, I'm after a bit of info on the rear electric blind for the
W126... I've just been able to find a rear electric blind for my SEL which needs
a bit of repair and a retrim. the blind has come to me in a collection of
bits but I have been able to purchase some missing or broken parts from
mercedes to make it work again but i have 3 questions which i'm hoping somebody can
answer which will stop me taking the blind in my SEC apart. 1. The kink in
the SEL guide rod - does it go at the top or the bottom? 2. I have been given
a spring, which the guide from mercedes goes between the white toothed rod
and the black blind fixing - is this just a buffer or is it supposed to be
attached to the 2 parts? 3. In relation to question 2 - if the blind is not
attached to the rod does the blind automatically retract by the blind's spring
loading? Thanks Jon
