[W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump

When I bought my car, the previous owner unplugged the electric clutch to
that pump, so it just free wheeled. When I pulled my heads, I removed the
pump, brackets and plugged the hose fitting to the engine with JB Weld.
I've (knock on wood) passed NJ emissions inspection every time since (and
even when it was just unplugged). I would guess if I parked the car at the
inspection station over night and they did the inspection when the engine
was ice cold, it may fail, but when would that happen.
Of course if you are concerned about originality or what's happening to the
ozone layer during the first minute of startup, spend the $800.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump
I have a 1990 SEC Euro. During a routine check-up my mechanic found out that
the 'airpump' was broken. He told me the function of this pump is to "blow
extra air in the engine when it's cold/during startup". He estimated a new
pump would cost about $800. BUT he also advised me NOT te replace it because
in his opinion this pump is not really necessary... Not being a mechanic
myself this is kind of confusing to me. Does anybody know what this pump is
for? And, if MB designed this beautiful car WITH this airpump, could it
really be left out? I guess it is supposed to do something useful.. Any
suggestions?
Thanx!
Ruud
