[W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump

It has two purposes - one is to blow air for maybe 30 seconds only during
engine startup, and the second is to be a visible lump on the engine so the
emissions testing folks can see it. It is NOT necessary for the engine to
run. I'd suggest removing the electrical connection to the clutch so it
never engages and just leave it there, a useless but visible passenger
forever.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump

I have a 1990 SEC Euro. During a routine check-up my mechanic found out that
the 'airpump' was broken. He told me the function of this pump is to "blow
extra air in the engine when it's cold/during startup". He estimated a new
pump would cost about $800. BUT he also advised me NOT te replace it because
in his opinion this pump is not really necessary... Not being a mechanic
myself this is kind of confusing to me. Does anybody know what this pump is
for? And, if MB designed this beautiful car WITH this airpump, could it
really be left out? I guess it is supposed to do something useful.. Any
suggestions?

Thanx!
Ruud
