[W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump

Ditto here re. the air pump. I removed the belt on my 89 560 and passed
NY inspection. It is still on the car but I'm thinking of recycling it
for more use as an anchor for my boat.
One thing I have done is to remove and plug the vac. Line to the EGR
valve. In previous American cars that I have rebuilt motors I saw that
cars without ERG have cleaner intake runner, valves, etc. I guess it's
like person smoking vs. not smoking. Don't know if there are any other
pros or cons to this.
I have not pulled the SEC motor apart (and hope I won't have to anytime
soon) but I assume it will help keep it's lungs cleaner going forward.
This does need to be reconnected at inspection though.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] question about 'engine' airpump
I have a 1990 SEC Euro. During a routine check-up my mechanic found out
that the 'airpump' was broken. He told me the function of this pump is
to "blow extra air in the engine when it's cold/during startup". He
estimated a new pump would cost about $800. BUT he also advised me NOT
te replace it because in his opinion this pump is not really
necessary... Not being a mechanic myself this is kind of confusing to
me. Does anybody know what this pump is for? And, if MB designed this
beautiful car WITH this airpump, could it really be left out? I guess it
is supposed to do something useful.. Any suggestions?
Thanx!
Ruud
