Hi Jack:

On my 86 euro sedan, I simply cleaned the abs sensors with a tooth brush 
during the R&R of front wheel bearings and races and this eliminated the 
sometimes unexpected abs activation on braking.  ABS light on the dash 
has never come on however so you may well have other problems. You 
should be able to access those sensors and clean them up to see if that 
helps. I'd check the cable as well for nicks or cracks.
