[W126 Coupe] Some general (if not obscure) SEC questions

Hi All,
As some of you know, I recently purchased a 1990 560SEC (I've
attached a small photo that I think those
of you who appreciate the form of the SEC will like :-).
Being a computer geek, and generally a technical sort of fellow, I
though it good idea to pose
some questions to you guys regarding my car, in order for me to get a
better understanding of it.
These are generally not related to problems (pretty much everything
on my car is 100%) but rather
just general knowledge.
First off, I noticed that there are air ducts running from the
dashboard into the doors (they seal
when the doors are closed). What is the purpose of these (since there
are no vents in the
doors themselves)?
Secondly, as far as I understand, self-leveling rear air-suspension
was an optional extra on these
cars. How do you know if your car has that option? (I though it must
have the suspension "hardness"
switch inside the car, which I do not have). What, then, is the pump
I can clearly see (and hear, if the
car is idling and you take a look underneath it) behind my right rear
wheel? Vacuum pump?
If it is a vacuum pump, what is the vacuum system in this car
responsible for (apart from the
door locks obviously) ?
thank you so much for your time - this is a very valuable and
informative list,
greetings from South Africa,
Dawid
