John,

Sounds very scary indeed!

Glad nothing happened to you (or your car...).

Sounds like something more is going on than just fouled sensors. That the 
engine shut down and the steering locked up is idicative of more trouble 
than simply the ABS malfunctioning.

I'm afraid I don't have any advice on what to look for, but make sure you 
get it taken care of before you start driving the car again.
