Thanks for the information and ideas Attila.  I'll go ahead and clearcoat.
I know what you mean by the plastic wafer grommets.  I'll likely just do the
adhesive spray where I've done 4 pads now and no problems after many years.
I will say that the pad I just scraped off the parts car was installed by me
6 years ago and while it remained intact with no lifting or sags once I went
to remove it, it just disintegrated.  So, I'd guess they have a life of 6
years but can remain undisturbed for a few more if you are lucky.
