[W126 Coupe] intermittant idle problem

I have an idle problem that is getting worse and worse.
Sometimes it will idle great, then it will decide to start
idling REALLY bad.  After awhile it will start running OK
again.
 
Last time it did it, I pulled the air cleaner to check the
metering unit.  What I found is that it is running extremely
lean - by pressing down on the metering plate (a LOT), I can
get it to run great.  
 
Higher RPM & high power operation is fine.
 
Anybody know what might be the culprit?
