Hi Richard:

I just replied off-list to another fellow asking a similar question.
Here you go:

"Hi Gary:

Standing in front of and under your car you will see the flywheel. It
is accessed using a socket with a flexible head and short extension (at
least that's how I do it). It's tough to reach where the fan shroud and
radiator are both in close proximity to the flywheel. Set the socket
wrench in place and turn it clockwise looking from the front of the
engine rearward. You need a second person looking from rear to front to
spy the torque converter drain plug on the valve body of the
transmission with the pan removed.

I let the whole belly of the transmission drain for a good 30 minutes
before placing the new filter, torque converter drain plug, pan gasket
and pan back in place. Be especially carefully to not allow any dirt or
lint to get in the transmission. I always use a clean rag on the
dipstick never paper or lint laden towels. Wipe the funnel down
carefully. Clean away all dirt debris on the old pan/gasket before
removing. Then clean the pan once you've dropped it. Do the entire job
like you are a clean freak.

Check the pan for metal filings or significant amounts of metal sludge
that would indicate bigger troubles. A small thin amount of sludge is
normal. A heavy build-up that covers the entire bottom of the pan and
or visible metal particles spells trouble. You can check the old
transmission filter in the same way.

Torque the pan bolts evenly and to factory spec to avoid gasket or pan
damage.

Dick"
