First of all if the "cop" is targeting you at 5000 feet he has to have some
good steady hands and aim.  Not that it can't be done!  There is no minimum
anywhere that I'm aware of, so the 1000 ft thing is out!  Now a Mercedes SEC
is (A Big Target), a lot of spots to get a hit from!
As a side note, Jeeps (for some reason) make the best targets!  Besides he
("cop") is more likely to see you first and then your toast!

No you wouldn't. Well you would to get the range down to zero, but the
headlights and front plate alone will drop the range from like 5000ft to
800ft. Hopefully by the time you are 800ft away you'll see the cop, plus
IIRC the cop using laser is supposed to track the car starting when he's
1000ft away, which could give you 200ft where he's pointing it right at
you but he isn't getting a reading. Since you'll most likely only get a
laser warning if it's pointing right at you, this could be useful.

Laser absorbent paint. Greatly reduces the range of an officer's laser
gun.
