The handle on yours isn't part of the wood? On my car it's just one piece of wood (http://davidson.smugmug.com/gallery/481122/1/19601693/Large)

Hi Richard:
That's a worthwhile modification. I removed the handle and chrome trim on
the 83 ashtray face and then removed the remaining wood face altogether from
the ashtray metal frame. Disposing of the metal frame and keeping just the
wood fascia absent handle.
You then have the wood that can be set in place with a nice smooth finish in
place of the ashtray. A small 1/4X1/2 X 2 inch rail of wood or black
plastic is then glued to the left and right sides of the center console
ashtray cut-out. I used a Velcro strip to then tightly secure the wood
ashtray face to the console opening.
Now you can take your power source (the lighter power is switched on the 83
to only work when ignition is full on, pos 2) from the position 1 accessory
harness on the ignition switch and create a 12VDC jack for your iPod in the
wood face. You could tap in parallel with the radio power circuit where the
iPod and receiver need to be powered at the same time anyway.
I think your only remaining question will then be, what's the aux output
cable look like on the ipod and how could you fit this to a port similar to
the 12VDC power jack on the wood face to mate with the aux input on the
receiver?
