Or maybe since he's getting in hot air the car is pinging big time? Are
you in California running that junking CA 91 octane? Granted this is a
big stretch, but I suppose it could happen.
But really those tubes aren't restricting airflow. The things that
restrict air flow are things like the intake manifold. The engine is a
big vacuum pump, and those tubes are plenty big enough, even if you put
straight 3 inch pipes coming off of the exhaust manifold.

.. My pristine '91 560SEC snapped a camshaft for the second time in less
than a month...
I don't recall anyone else on this list having a snapped camshaft before
and for you to have 2 would suggest to me that it's not defective cams.
When the first cam was removed was there any signs of excessive wear or
heat on the bearing surfaces? Maybe the last cam tower isn't getting
enough oil, causing the cam to heat up in that bearing, expand, seize up
and snap.
Did your mechanic replace the oil tube? The plastic connectors can
become brittle and break, not allowing oil to get to the cam surfaces.
