[W126 Coupe] Can someone help me with a vin number

On a 30 degree day here in Kansas City the "hot" air I am getting is probably not too hot. Probably no more so than the air I would get on a 100 degree day here through those tubes but I have access to much more of it.
Some people do not agree with this modification and that is OK. I did not invent the idea but only read about it on Mercedes Forum where the writer said it would add 20 horsepower which I think is optimistic.
Being in the HVAC business much of my adult life I know you cannot blow more air out of the registers than you can take in through the return air intakes. You must have more square inches of return air grill than you do of registers.
I think the real reason for those tubes is sound abatement so the driver and passengers do not hear the air being drawn in.
To each his own and I appreciate the counterpoint.
Best Wishes,
John

Or maybe since he's getting in hot air the car is pinging big time? Are you in California running that junking CA 91 octane? Granted this is a big stretch, but I suppose it could happen.

But really those tubes aren't restricting airflow. The things that restrict air flow are things like the intake manifold. The engine is a big vacuum pump, and those tubes are plenty big enough, even if you put straight 3 inch pipes coming off of the exhaust manifold.

.. My pristine '91 560SEC snapped a camshaft for the second time in less than a month.

I don't recall anyone else on this list having a snapped camshaft before and for you to have 2 would suggest to me that it's not defective cams. When the first cam was removed was there any signs of excessive wear or heat on the bearing surfaces? Maybe the last cam tower isn't getting enough oil, causing the cam to heat up in that bearing, expand, seize up and snap.

Did your mechanic replace the oil tube? The plastic connectors can become brittle and break, not allowing oil to get to the cam surfaces.

  Chet
