Tom,
Just curious what your rationale is.
What I am getting at is that it is fine to look at the cost of a ton of iron
ore, or any other commodity, over time.
However, I always have a problem with comparing products or services that
are not the same, or even similar. I mean, the 1990 560 SEC can't really be
compared to a 2005 CL.
Cars are more expensive today than in 1970 and therefore we have had
inflation. Well, yes, but the cars are different too. Trying to isolate the
inflation part from the difference in technology, safety standards and
requirements, the impact of regulations, etc., is quite difficult.
Looking at the JD Power survey, cars are dramtically better today than five
years ago. If prices have gone up, can it be explained by the improvements
in quality? Do they come better equipped?
A CD player was an option on my 560 SEC in 1990 at a cost of about $800.
Today it is standard equipment. Do you include the price of the CD player
for your 1990 car? If you do that, how do you correct for the CD player if
you compare a 2005 car to a 1970 car?
Just my thoughts.
Regards,
Axel J. Wulff
