Richard,
In the 190e with a serpentine belt system, yes I will need to fit a new belt. As for the 560 SEL, one belt runs the Compressor but is also guided by the AC idler pulley.

"You do need the aux. fan to switch on with the 
defroster, which can be achieved by jumping the wires"
What did you mean by jumping the wires? Were you thinking of how I could make certain systems work if I did remove the compressor?
