I'd be inclined to repair the oil pan drain plug as well. Fitting the new drain plug with the correct copper washer and just snugging it up correctly.
Mike's vise grips firmly clamped on there and then whack counterclockwise with a hammer or if the drain plug is still in solid shape attach the socket using a two foot breaker bar and give it a tug. Do this on a cold engine. If it is cross threaded or severely torqued without a washer you could crack the pan I suppose.
One last thought, you may have sucked the pan dry if you had consumed oil before the change. Did you check your oil level on the dipstick just prior to using the 'topsider'??
