[W126 Coupe] How much oil in the AC?

If your system is dry (without a charge) you can check the oil level in the compressor on both Nippondenso and the GM Harrison by opening the side plug. The oil should be filled to where it just overflows this plug. The only time I have removed oil from an R-12 and replenished with a PAG150 viscosity was on the install of a new A-6 GM/Harrison compressor. Where you simply place your compressor on the work bench manifold side open and down and turn the compressor impeller by hand until all of the oil has drained out. Then replace with correct viscosity oil through the side filler plug. PAG46 for R134 on the Nippondenso's.

The receiver/dryer if replaced needs a charge of 1.5 ounces of oil. The MB service CD has the correct viscosity and capacity for system components as do the folks a www.ackits.com .

I am running for MB's with R-134 and am most happy with the results. Longest run so far is the 300k mile 1990 300SE which has been on R-134A now for 5 seasons. In fairness, I R&R'd the compressor last year using my spare 10P Nippo from the salvaged 91 300E due to a bad clutch. There was some sign of light gray oil in the lines so I flushed just the condenser, replaced the r/d replenished the PAG46 and buttoned her back up.

Is there a way to measure the amount of oil in the AC system? Is it possible to overfill the system with oil? Does the vacuum pump remove it all, along with the refrigerant and water vapor?

  Thanks,

  Tom
