Connie,
Buck never stopped expanding and was quite big when I first met him in the
60's. My last fond memories of him were at his memorial service at St. James
Episcopal which he founded, built and was located in his beloved East
Austin. The main speaker told of Louis' sometimes creative if disturbing
demonstrations for civil rights within the environs of the institutional
church at clerical gatherings. Then he said that he had to admit that Louis
had been right all along and the church leaders had been wrong. It was a
hell of a seminal moment.
I was a bit of a demonstrator at his memorial, too. The Bishop extended his
hand for me to kiss his ring. I shook his hand.
