Dear retros friends,

Greetings from Mumbai where I am visiting for work.

Actually it's not quite right: two characters were removed resulting in a
7-rank diagram. *This* works:
http://www.janko.at/Retros/d.php?ff=rnb1qb1r/pppk1ppp/3pp3/n7/2PP2P1/1B5Q/PP
2PP1P/RNB1K1NR

Interesting how robust Otto's display function is. But the wrapping is a
problem. Let's suppose an email line can allow 80 characters. A diagram
might contain up to 71 characters, after the = sign, but my diagram contains
54 characters which
might be more typical.

This is what 80 characters look like:
1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456
7890

One might shorten the string as:
www.janko.at/Retros/d.php?ff=rnb1qb1r/pppk1ppp/3pp3/n7/2PP2P1/1B5Q/PP2PP1P/R
NB1K1NR

or even shorter, but no longer clickable at least in my Outlook editor:
janko.at/Retros/d.php?ff=rnb1qb1r/pppk1ppp/3pp3/n7/2PP2P1/1B5Q/PP2PP1P/RNB1K
1NR

So the prefix is 25 right now. 25+54=79. But in the worst case, 25+71=98.
Otto could easily economize another 5 characters by putting the link in a
directory called R rather than Retros, and maybe there are other short cuts
he could perform. (E.g. buying the domain name j.at.) :)

Maybe I can then set my email page width to be 80 characters maximum, which
would give me an alert if the position is likely to wrap.

Thanks,
Andrew.

Hello,

I think that the problem comes from the fact the line is truncated is the
middle of the forsythe notation :

http://www.janko.at/Retros/d.php?ff=rnb1qb1r/pppk1ppp/3pp3/n
2PP2P1/1B5Q/PP 2PP1P/RNB1K1NR

Just concatenating both lines works :

http://www.janko.at/Retros/d.php?ff=rnb1qb1r/pppk1ppp/3pp3/n2PP2P1/1B5Q/PP2P
P1P/RNB1K1NR

Just hopping that the tool used to read the mail does not again cut the line
in 2 parts.

Happy New Year,
Pascal

What was the year of birth of the composer of this problem?
(Hint: proof game in 7.5 moves. How many solutions?)
(16+16) C+ Popeye

Quick! Commemorate your own birth year! (While stocks last...) :o)
Thanks, Andrew.
