Joe,

This is a really ambitious project.

If you care to, you can get all of the VIN numbers for all 1991 cars through the EPC, though you'd have to manually enter each number into the system to pull the data card for that car. The data card would give you all options, interior/exterior colors, etc. for each car.

I've been compiling this same information for the 1991-1995 500E and E500 cars, of which 10,479 were produced (worldwide number) and 1,505 were imported over 3 models years into the US market. I track all sales information, condition and subjective information on modifications, asking prices, sale prices if know, locations, etc. A registry of this type is a real labor of love and takes a lot of care, feeding and nurturing.

The good thing is that over a period of years, you can get a good database going of cars and when they come up for sale, you can serve as a resource for potential buyers. I've saved dozens of potential buyers from making costly mistakes over the past 8 years by identifying situations where odometers were rolled back, titles of wrecked cars were "cleansed" in other states, and accident cars not reported as being in accidents were passed off as clean cars. Not to mention what cars looked like and previous owners' modifications were.

From the MB VIN records, you can also deduce the number of cars that were produced in each interior and exterior color combination, and what options were most prevalent, etc.

The best sources for your cars will probably be sites like AutoTrader.com and eBay.

Good luck with the project. I'd love to add my data to your compilation, but alas … my car is only a 1989 model.

Cheers,
Gerry
