Just a few things to make sure people are not confused on this:
THE OLD STATUS QUO
There is a web site that has been around for a LONG time at
www.mbcoupes.com. This web site has not been updated/curated for at least 5 years
There is an email list (THIS e-mail list) that has been around for a LONG
time at email address mbcoupes at mbcoupes.com. This email list is not
actively managed and hasn't been for a long time. Furthermore it uses antiquated
1990s email list technology. This email list's archives were once
available but don't seem to be available anymore (or only partly available). The
list has a number of members whose accounts have been taken over by spammers
-- mainly an irritation, but if the list was actively managed this
nuisance could easily be eliminated.
WHAT STEVE AND I DID ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO:
Recognizing that 126 coupe owners deserve an actively managed and curated
e-mail list, two weeks ago Steve and I established a REPLACEMENT e-mail
list at email address mbcoupes at mbcoupes.org (i.e. the "new" list). We had
about 30 people sign up for that new list using a web page that Steve
graciously set up for this purpose, to make the signup process easy. At my
request, Steve has taken that signup page down because as I indicated, I have been
planning to abandon the "new list" effort due to a lack of critical mass
over the past 2 weeks.
I reserved the domain www.mbcoupes.org (different from mbcoupes.com) and
am using that address both for the "new" email list (mbcoupes at mbcoupes.org)
and also to point directly to a separate, SEC-focused internet forum that I
tacked onto a web site I run that caters to 500E and 400E owners. If you
go to the web site "www.mbcoupes.org" you will get pointed to this Internet
forum. It is primarily a repository for how-tos and other information
that is of interest to 126 coupe owners.
The "new" mbcoupes.org email list that Steve and I set up IS ONLY for
SEC/126 related information. There is no 500E information on this list - it
would be off-topic.
If you want full access to photographs posted on the 126 sub-board on my
500E web site, you have to sign up for the forum for a free membership, just
like with any other web forum. Full text is available for anyone and
doesn't require sign-up, but for photos associated with the how-tos you do have
to sign up. This is TOTALLY OPTIONAL and is NOT ASSOCIATED with the "new
emai list" that Steve Nervig and I set up. The web forum is only an
additional resource out there that I made available because it's an easy add-on
to the 500E site I have already been running for several years now.
I hope this clears things up. It seems that people do seem to have
interest in the "new email list" and I intend to make a final decision about it
tomorrow (Thursday).
Thanks and regards,
Gerry

Hello all,
I got sick and tired of the spam on this list, not to mention the fact
that
nobody is minding the store here to stop it, and also the fact that this
list software is really circa 1995 in terms of capabilities. I'm talking
woefully out of date.
I thought I'd provide folks with an alternative and with the help of Steve
Nervig, we very quickly did just that. We have had about 28 people sign up
for the new list, and there has been some traffic on it.
However, I do see via this list that people want to continue using this
antiquated list, and I guess people don't mind the spam here.
The trial period for the "new" list at mbcoupes.org is coming to a close
on
September 2nd, and after that point I'll be required to pay $65 to
continue
to operate the list for the next year. I don't mind paying this myself
(as
I
paid for the mbcoupes.org domain name already) for the good of the
community, if people want to use it. It's not a money thing, at all. But
it
seems that the usage has been lower than I thought -- people didn't seem
to
want to move from this list over to the new one.
I'm good with that, folks vote with their feet .. or not. If people don't
want to use the new list, I'm not going to push the issue nor spend $65
per
year to operate a dead list.
So, just a heads up to all, I'm going to let the "new" mbcoupes.org e-mail
list expire on September 2nd. I will delete all names and email addresses
for the 28 folks who signed up. For those who signed up for the new list,
a
heart-felt thanks for your willingness to try something new. I think
Steve
will also delete the sign-up web page he created for the new list.
Cheers,
Gerry

Spam has nothing to do with your choice of machine architecture or
operating system. It depends on the widespread purchase of lists with
your email address on them, and the effectiveness of the junk filters at
your email host or in your current email program.
I've blacklisted the more frequent spammers of this list (did you notice
they all used AOL addresses?) right at my email host, so their junk
never gets delivered to me any more.

Hey Gerry,
Once again you've stepped up added valuable contribution to our MBCOUPES
community, thanks.. This one is an on going service to us all and it is
especially generous of you and I sure everyone appreciates it. But it
will
take a good bit of time before a majority of the listers will convert
over.
I would venture a guess that the reason this old format works is because
we
network through our email, which is (in most cases) always on. It's easy
to
skim the new postings and delete/reply as to mood hits. But the key
thing
is that I don't have to do anything special to stay in touch with
MBCOUPEsters. Yes, sometimes it's a bit of a pain to skim through some of
the garbage, but there is a lot of good stuff too. Stuff that I know,
I'd
miss if weren't logged on to a message board.
I use message boards (cars, computers, home repairs, you name it) all day
long and think they are great, but I'm usually looking for something
specific and don't have the time to dedicate to 1 or 2 of them to be a
real
contributor. That kind of bothers me, because I'm not one to take
without
giving back.
Message boards are a phenomenal success and a great source for information
and social interaction and the way it's done now. But, as far as
converting
us old timers (I joined up shortly after Satish set MBCoupes up) over
night,
it's going to take a little more time.
Thanks again,
Chet

Subject: [W126 Coupe] Decision time with regard to the "new" MB Coupes
list
Hello all,
I got sick and tired of the spam on this list, not to mention the fact
that nobody is minding the store here to stop it, and also the fact that
this list software is really circa 1995 in terms of capabilities. I'm
talking woefully out of date.
I thought I'd provide folks with an alternative and with the help of
Steve Nervig, we very quickly did just that. We have had about 28 people
sign up for the new list, and there has been some traffic on it.
However, I do see via this list that people want to continue using this
antiquated list, and I guess people don't mind the spam here.
The trial period for the "new" list at mbcoupes.org is coming to a close
on September 2nd, and after that point I'll be required to pay $65 to
continue to operate the list for the next year. I don't mind paying this
myself (as I paid for the mbcoupes.org domain name already) for the good
of the community, if people want to use it. It's not a money thing, at
all. But it seems that the usage has been lower than I thought -- people
didn't seem to want to move from this list over to the new one.
I'm good with that, folks vote with their feet .. or not. If people
don't want to use the new list, I'm not going to push the issue nor
spend $65 per year to operate a dead list.
So, just a heads up to all, I'm going to let the "new" mbcoupes.org
e-mail list expire on September 2nd. I will delete all names and email
addresses for the 28 folks who signed up. For those who signed up for
the new list, a heart-felt thanks for your willingness to try something
new. I think Steve will also delete the sign-up web page he created for
the new list.
Cheers,
Gerry

Chet, thanks for the comments.
Just so that we are clear, the new List ([MBCOUPES]
mbcoupes at mbcoupes.org)
was/is exactly the same as the old List (this one - Mercedes Coupes
Mailing Lists <mbcoupes at mbcoupes.com>). It worked exactly the same way,
ie, as a
mailing list, not primarily as a message board. There is a message board
attached, which can be a repository of stuff that we want to keep
visible,
like How To's, etc. But the List works the same, via email, and would be
where all of the day-to-day emails would occur.
The idea is that the new List WOULD be exactly the same as the old, but
we
would be able monitor it better, as the current List is not monitored.
Hope this helps clearing up any misconceptions.

Oh, Thanks Steve.. I was thinking you'd have to be logged into the new
.org
site to post to the site and monitor other's postings.
Well, I just registered, but plan on keeping both for now..
Thanks again Steve for everything,
Chet
BTW, will we be receiving only MBCOUPES postings or the 500E stuff too??

on September 2nd, and after that point I'll be required to pay $65 to
continue to operate the list for the next year. I don't mind paying this
myself
(as I paid for the mbcoupes.org domain name already) for the good of the
community, if people want to use it. It's not a money thing, at all. But
it
seems that the usage has been lower than I thought -- people didn't seem
to
want to move from this list over to the new one.

e-mail list expire on September 2nd. I will delete all names and email
addresses for the 28 folks who signed up. For those who signed up for the
new list,
a heart-felt thanks for your willingness to try something new. I think
Steve will also delete the sign-up web page he created for the new list.

This is not even getting into their lack of quality control on many of
their
new cars. This from former owners who have switched to BMW or other brands

this list software is really circa 1995 in terms of capabilities. I'm
talking
woefully out of date.

Steve Nervig, we very quickly did just that. We have had about 28 people
sign
up for the new list, and there has been some traffic on it.

on September 2nd, and after that point I'll be required to pay $65 to
continue to operate the list for the next year. I don't mind paying this
myself
(as I paid for the mbcoupes.org domain name already) for the good of the
community, if people want to use it. It's not a money thing, at all. But
it
seems that the usage has been lower than I thought -- people didn't seem
to
want to move from this list over to the new one.

don't want to use the new list, I'm not going to push the issue nor spend
$65
per year to operate a dead list.

e-mail list expire on September 2nd. I will delete all names and email
addresses for the 28 folks who signed up. For those who signed up for the
new list,
a heart-felt thanks for your willingness to try something new. I think
Steve will also delete the sign-up web page he created for the new list.
