Dan,

If your knobs remove like Al says they will you can make a couple of tools
that allow you to insert the flat tip from both sides of the knob and lever
them off. I have been using two different sizes made for the clock repair
business for 40+ years. They are about 4.5" long, curve at the ends with
a flat blade. You could heat a cheap pair of small screwdrivers to get the
bend you need and then heat some more and flatten with a ball-peen hammer to
obtain a thin "blade".

Dan,

The manually controlled heater/fan system is rare in N. America. I had a
German import 380SE with that system (and no A/C) but in 150,000Km nothing
had gone wrong and I never had to remove it. I have worked on a 230C (W123)
recently with manual controls similar to your car but not identical. The
turn switches for fan speed and air direction on "off" position pulled
straight off exposing a nut holding the face panel. I can't imagine yours
being different. BTW, the light switch is exactly the same, but takes a
good tug.

-Al
