Jay,
Why is there a difference between alternator charging and trickle charging?
A trickle charger keeps the battery fully charged and an alternator is
supposed to do the same thing under power plus provide enough electricity
for accessories like heater, air, lights, and, of course, ignition. None of
these are being used when the car is "at rest".
Dick D.
My three cents.
The "best" way to get long life from any battery is to use the car
everyday or at least four times a week with rides of fifteen minutes or
longer.
Trickle charge, etc. is not the same as driving a car with the battery
being charged by the alternator.
Hot weather, temperatures above 90 F(33 C) take a "lot out of a battery,"
but you only know this when the temperature is below 10 degrees F (-12
C, I think)
keep cruisin

On the issue of trading personal experiences and not meaning to discount any
of the foregoing valuable battery advice... I have a Magnacharge 50 battery
that I stole from a Ford Tempo (with the terminals on the wrong sides) in my
300TD (yes, DIESEL) and two years later, it still works fine. The battery
is so small that there would be room to carry another spare on the same
battery tray.
If that says anything at all, it certainly is the most economical way to go.
