[W126 Coupe] Exhaust system

Ronny,

I've been looking into ways of improving my gas mileage and one of the
suggestion from this group was to improve on the exhaust system. A few
years back, I spent a little money to give the rear end the dual exhaust
look with 2" exhaust tail pipes and tips. I think that it looks nicer and
sounds sportier but I also think that that is about all I got for my money.
What I have been told, however, is that if I will replace the remaining
stock exhaust pipe with 2" pipe and the existing two catalytic converters
with two less restrictive 2" high performance cats that I should get the
results that I am looking for. The price quoted me for this upgrade here in
the Boise ID area was $678.00 (quote is from a top notch muffler shop about
a month ago). I'm still thinking about it but I may just wait until I have
to replace the system.

Ronny,

Just replace what needs replacing, but use the best parts you can afford.
Exhaust pipes are modularized with the resonators or mufflers, so you'll end
up with three big chunks: Downtubes (with pre-cats for CA/Fed spec) which
are left and right, cross-over to the main catalyst or front resonators back
towards the rear of the car, another set of pipes leading to the rear
mufflers and tailpipes. Euro models with "true dual exhaust" are different
and lack the cats in the path. Complete aftermarket systems run $750-$1200,
Borla and Anza still sell aftermarket systems if you want to avoid dealer
gouging. I replaced exhausts on two of my MBZ cars with a system in 300
series stainless steel fabricated by Timevalve.com. When the cost of
piece-parts and labor is figured in (not much remaining useful life) it
didn't make sense to just replace the rear pipes/mufflers. Don't forget new
hangers, the full hanger kit is about $75.00 with OE parts.

Good luck,

-K

I think I need a new exhaust system. I noticed some leaking sound.

Any recommendation or suggestion will help. Should I have to replace the
whole system or just the leaking part?

Thank you.
