[W126 Coupe] "Whirring" noise in the engine

Just and FYI .....Wal-Mart, Supertech transmission fluid Dextron / mercon III pretty cheap. I've been using it for several years now in many older cars that called for that fluid. No issue with transmissions on the supertech brand of fluid. Some say its Exxon brand, pensoil brand or warn oil company. All I know is when the GM scans the bottle with the inventory gun it shows up Exxon whatever that's worth. It has all the proper service rating for what is required. Works for me. Just though I would pass it along.

Type F can be used where Dexron/Mercon is called for but you cannot use Dexron/Mercon where Type F is called for.

"Type F" is different from Dexron/Mercon III? I'll get me some Lucas additive tomorrow to see what transpires.

worn reverse and front pump cheesing out are two very different problems.. your reverse clutches were/are weak, lucas has an additive package that helps make them Grab, as well as thickening the fluid which ups the pressure on the band/clutch pack.
You can buy a good bit of time w/ lucas and worn clutches. Switching to Type F helps as well.

Not in anyway would i promote this.... But if worse came to worse and it turns out trans pump. I would try some lucas tranny additive. A few years ago my tranny would lung into reverse. Long story short 2 different shops said needs tranny. I put the lucas in and the reverse problem completly went away. Maybe it will help the seals in the pump if thats where its coming from?

if it's from the trans only thing that would whir would be the front pump....NG :(

I did the long screwdriver to the ear trick and it, unfortunately, ain't the pump. Darn. Good idea though.
What about something in the front of the tranny??

they don't have to leak to make noise;-)
On jack's SEC his pump made noise when it was cold.

Thought about that too and took mine apart (it was fine), then put in a new set of viton o-rings. It "should" be good for ten more years.
Good ideas, but not the problem one yet!!

Is your air pump unplugged? That's what mine sounded like till I unplugged it.

My '87 560SEL makes a "whirring" noise when it's first started. Sounds almost like a bad bearing in the alternator and loud enough that my wife is commenting on it but in a mile or so it goes away.
- I removed all the V-belts on the front of the motor, still have the noise.
- Since it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side of the engine up high, I removed that valve cover then ran the engine - it was louder.
- Put in a new timing chain and new guides. !@#$%^&* - still have the noise but the car has noticeably more power.
It REALLY needed the guides since one was broken in two and a 3" long piece is missing plus another had the hole for the retention pin wallowed out. I looked very carefully down the chain pathway during the installations but no sign of the piece.
Will removal of the oil pan allow me to see much of the lower timing chain guide area? If the missing chain guide is jammed in there and rubbing on the rotating bits, why would the noise diminish in a minute or so of operation?
Suggestions??
Thanks,
Mike
