How do you know they were bad if they didn't leak? I just got off the phone with Gary at buy mbparts and ordered all the rubber parts since at 230k miles, I know they should be replaced. He also called Jonathan to talk about it. Do you have Jonathan's phone nbr?

Tom,
I'll second what Axel said, with a hinge. In my case, the struts did go bad and didn't leak. Why? Because the accumulators I replaced went bad and I didn't know it. Should have listened to Jono and bought genuine MB (and spent $$$). Instead I bought aftermarket and after a year when the ride became harsh again, assumed it wasn't them and kept driving like that for a good bit till I finally figured it out. So yes, they can leak, but, if you drive around on a bad suspension long enough like I did, they can go bad then too.
New they are expensive. After getting another opinion (I'd call Jono and talk to him in person, he's knows these cars inside and out), I'd look around for a good used set. That's what I did - bought them from a fellow member here with a totalled car.
Best of luck,
Markus

Time for a second opinion......
The hydraulic rams don't wear out.
They may start to leak, but they don't wear like regular shocks.

Thanks to all for their input. Well, I got a call from the mechanic, a guy I trust. He even lets me buy the parts. The left rear hydraulic shock needs to be replaced. He also said the right one wasn’t great either. So I need 2 struts, bushings, and retainer. I do not want to go with non-hydraulics. I also need to replace all the motor mounts. Anybody have any ideas for where to get the parts? Also, about how many hours are we talking for all of this? Thanks.
Tom

+1 on that.. Had clunking on both w202 and 560SEC... in both cases it was the rear plastic stabilizer ... Its easy to locate too if u get a chance on the lift

Tom;
I think Markus is likely right. The culprit is likely the Sway (Stabilizer) Bar Link that joins the rear sway bar to trailing arm
Part No 123 320 09 89) When broken they will clunk when bouncing the rear corner. Easy to see (remove wheel - directly behind the brake disc back plate), and easy to replace. They cost less than $10.
That would be the first place to look anyway.

Today when walking up to my 560SEC from across the parking lot, I noticed that the left rear looked lower than the right rear. I looked at it more closely and then when I go home I made a crude measurement to see how much lower. It looks to be fairly substantial, on the order of 3/8”, maybe more.
I also noticed a “clunking” sound going over bumps that I had actually thought was the cooler I keep in the trunk, but now I think not. The ride does not seem hard, the symptom of the accumulators going bad. I had actually replaced both of them around 60k miles ago…the car is high mileage…I bought it to drive and I do! Does anybody have any ideas as to what to look at before I bring it in? Thanks
