Had the rear rubber bearing let loose of the attachment points at the frame floor. The differential dropped and was dragging on the street. Had heard a noise when engaging reverse for the past year or so. Got under there and had checked the flex disk about 8 months ago. Couldn't see anything obviously loose. Luckily not going very fast (~ 20mph) when it dropped.
Getting the two slide holders out was quite an exercise. Three of the four studs were sheared off. I won't get into the details, but let's hear it for small needle-nose vise grips.
Just a note to you guys to check these. MBZ went to Version 2 of the holder with self-locking nuts. My replacement was still Version 1, but I was ecstatic to get the differential back in place. Can anyone direct me to instructions on how to get to and remove and replace the inboard half-shaft boot?
