Hey guys time to throw my .02 cents in. I just bought a great 560 SEL in
Colorado that the owner said "didn't run" for $700 US. I bought if for the
tranny because my reverse is out. After towing it home I had my sone turn it
over while I sprayed ether down the throttle housing. I fired right up and
ran fantasitic! It does have a cold start problem but my point is buy a good
used motor and dirve it! I will part out the SEL and have a free engine and
trans for my SEC. If you go this route you can rebuild the Euro motor as
time/money permits and drop it in later.

Dawid,

I think you may be approaching this the wrong way mate. The US and Germany
aren't the last word in available replacement motors, used or otherwise. 

Why do a full rebuild and ship it across the Atlantic when there are likely
to be a few M117.968 motors locally? SA built the W126 cars for domestic use
a good 3 years after the other factories shutdown, all with the same motor
options as previously offered.

If these shops can't find you an engine in inventory, they likely know a
yard that can. Fewer motors of this type in BOT and NAM to be sure, count
yourself lucky. ;)

Hi Guys,
 
While I am working on local options, I am pre-emptively also having
a look at sourcing a replacement (remanufactured) block and pistons
overseas (U.S?) for my 560SEC engine that developed a cracked block
after the head gasket ruptured.
 
What are your opinions of http://www.mercedesengines.net ? Any other  
sources
I should be looking at for a decent price? I am sure that shipping it to
South Africa will be very expensive, but there are usually many options,
depending on whom one contacts, especially if one can get it included
as part of a shipment of somebody who regularly brings in engine parts,
so I am not too worried yet.
 
Any opinions and suggested would be greatly welcomed. Help me get her
up and running again!
