Hi Dan,
If you do not have full coverage on your own policy that provides for
full collision and LDW while traveling, you have no choice but to get
this added coverage and at the added cost. I know in the Northwest
(ie., Calgary) you need to add for glass coverage where they use gravel
for traction in the winter on all the roadways.
So, if you are comfortable with your insurance companies coverage
provisions you can decline and save the $. Just be sure you have all
the needed coverage confirmed and in writing on your personal and
umbrella policies before taking this cost saving measure.
By the way, I had a rental in San Francisco totaled when a fellow acting
out what I presume was the Steve McQueen movie, Bullet came over a hill
and rear ended me at a red light just opposite the Marriott at the
wharf. I had selected my personal policy for all damage coverage and
declined on the rental as per usual. The bill came into my offices for
$20 some odd thousand and the offending drivers policy paid all costs.
Had he been uninsured, I am told my policy would have paid the bill in
full.
Safe travels.
Dick
