Hi Kelly,

Just to be sure you are attacking the right problem, take a hold with
right hand of the flexible joint just above the steering box (couples
steering box to steering column before passing through the firewall to
passenger compartment) and wiggle back 'n forth observing movement in
the arm at the base of the steering box.

If you see a stationary arm or less movement then you are creating above
the box while moving the flexible joint then the box may need an
increase in friction by reducing the clearance on the internal
recirculating ball as per Jonathan's instructions.

If you see arm movement that closely approximates the movement you are
making in the flexible coupling then the box is okay. Some play is
permissible and expected, I think it is measured at the steering wheel
using the manual. I just go by what I see as described above and make
small adjustments, leaving the 17mm locking nut loose as I observe the
change in friction and lessened play.

If the box checks out as okay, you should then look elsewhere for play
as Sean suggests 'idler arm' and I'd also look at worn out steering
dampener, tie rod ends etc.

Good luck,
Dick
