I had the same problem with a 1990 560 SEC. It was intermittent but growing 
 more frequent over a three month period. It turned out to be a fuel 
control  relay. A good independent Benz shop in Kansas City did the 
troubleshooting in  about ten minutes, replaced the relay and there have been no problems 
since.  That was three years ago.
