I just acquired a 1988 Euro 560SEC that needs some help. I saw this car
about a year ago for sale here locally and looked at it. It needed a lot of
work at the time and I had identified the following problem.
- Strong pull to the right on driving and braking.
- Engine miss
- Bad window regulator
- Broken grill and blinker light
- Slight rust under the back glass
- Interior was recovered in some ‘exotic’ material that has not worn
well.
- Non working A/C
The nice things about the car are that it’s a full Euro with manual climate
control, kph speedo and no indication of any retrofit during the
federalization process.
Given the amount of work that the car needed, I thought it was too expensive
and later it came off the market. It was being sold on consignment by a
local dealer.
Five months ago, I saw the same car in the CL of another town and reached
out to the seller as I did not get a chance to speak to him. I wrote him a
note and told him frankly that I took this car for a drive and it needed a
lot of work which would make it unlikely that it will sell for the price he
was asking.
He wrote back and asked me to call him and we talked. He was shocked that I
took this car for a test drive and was not aware that it was for sale.
Apparently, he sold it through private financing to a fellow who stopped
making payments on it and just recently repossessed it.
He seemed like a nice guy and we chatted a few times as he needed some
technical assistance. The most recent conversation that we had was when the
car died on him and he said he was not getting any spark.
I thought it may be the EZL but told him to try the coil first.
Last week, he called and told me that he had to move for a work and he’s
tired of dragging this car so I made him a fair offer based on what I saw
and he accepted and I took delivery of the car today.
He said that he got the car running briefly by reconnecting a broken wire
yesterday but not since. The wire is a gray wire that seems to be going to
the bottom of the engine and to the diagnostic socket?
I’m not sure if this is the issue as I would be surprised that a wire to a
diagnostic socket would prevent the car from running.
The starter is also failing on the car and only engages some of the time.
Any thoughts here would be gratefully appreciated. I also noticed that the
EZL has a different part number to the US version. Are they interchangeable?
I have a spare from a C4C 560SEL.
The car needs a lot of work, but I would like to get it running before
anything else.
For you guys that have worked on Euro 560’s. Your input is gratefully
appreciated.
