[W126 Coupe] Heater noise

Ever since the cold weather has hit our area (below 32 degrees) when I start the car from a cold start a screeching noise, like fan turning, comes from under the dash in the passenger compartment.  As soon as the car heats up a little (after 5 minutes or so) then the noise stops.  The noise is there even if I turn the heating/cooling sustem off.  Any ideas?
