Dan,

If you mean loosely fitted to be only loosely screwed together, that
could be your problem.

The ground for the various gauges is through the back of them all, using
the boards and the housing of the speedometer, if I remember correctly.
If you tighten the fasteners holding the speedometer in the cluster and
things start working, that would be be both proof and a fix, as well as
fairly simple.

I hope it's something as simple as this and not a difference in the
wiring, since the harness is an absolute nuisance to rewire when it
comes apart!
