[W126 Coupe] RE Rolling Vibration on 1985 500 SEC

Can't speak clearly to "rolling vibration" but the miss at idle can be
from any one of several causes:
1) Bad ignition wire to plug (check each plug for color...the
dark one is the one missing)
a) Can be bad plug, bad wire, or bad distributor (A
spark analyzer can find this easily)
2) Fuel distribution problem:
a) (stuck open or closed) fuel injector (at the engine).
If this is the case...a forced cleaning
can be done...but before you do that (or replace the
injectors)...
b) Can also be bad fuel distributor. When running at
idle...slightly loosed each line from the
fuel distributor...fuel should be easily seen when the
nut is turned (loose) just a turn or two.
A 'quick fix' can be done in many cases by putting a high quality fuel
injector cleaner into the gas tank...maybe 2 or 3 times the recommended
amount. Drive the car a day or two....If this 'fixes it'...it is likely
a fuel contamination issue in one form or another. I have found that
SHELL gasoline (with the Nitrogen cleaners they use) keep my '84 500SEC
clean and running smooth without any extra cleanings or help of any kind
to run 'really smooth' at all times.
3) Vacuum Line connection on passenger side of Air Horn...mid
engine.
This vacuum line connection is via rubber hose and it wears out and has
a tendency to be 'loose' at times. This causes an irregular miss at
times. Best fix is to use a small clamp on the rubber line (right at the
intake area) to keep this vacuum line tight at all times. This is a
sneaky one.

P.S. Oh yes...the rolling vibration can be (among other things), bad
motor mounts allowing the engine to "move around", or the heat riser
(which is more of a 'rattle' than a vibration), but goes away when the
engine has warmed up.

L. Martin

My 1985 500 SEC had a slight shake like it was missing at
idle....thought it was a spark plug but they checked out ok. My
mechanic looked at it (he claims for 8 hours) and replaced the ignition
distributor cap but that didn't solve the problem. Drove the car and
the initial shake is gone but now there is a rolling vibration when the
car is standing still. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob

Could be motor mounts?

Best to just pay for a new lock cylinder. $60. The car's old and they
wear out.

That is really bad news I'm afraid.

You'll need to be able to unlock it to remove and replace the lock
cylinder.

If you can't wiggle it open, or find someone who can pick the lock for
you, it's almost World War III to remove the lock and half the dash will
need to be dismantled.
