Dan,
I'm not sure the thump from your rear suspension is related to worn out spheres.
Usually, when the rubber diaphragm ruptures, the suspension becomes rock hard and bouncy as you're only riding on the springs. Some have also reported that the suspension becomes very soft and wallowy.
Either way, I'd recommend a set of genuine MB spheres. They're not that much more expensive than the Chinese-made and the non-genuine set I used only lasted about 15,000 miles.
