[W126 Coupe] question about the tranny dip stick

How to check a car's automatic transmission fluid level
Checking transmission fluid can be easy and safe for anyone. The task doesnt take any special skill or knowledge to accomplish.
(their quote NOT mine ... ;-)

FYI ... Some newer transmissions are sealed and go 100,000 miles before needing the fluid changed. Since they are "sealed", the dipstick was eliminated and the only way to check the fluid level is to put the car in the air "while running" and remove the fill plug on the side of the transmission ... if fluid just dribbles out of the fill hole, the transmission fluid level is full. If the fluid does not dribble out you need to add some (of the same kind that is in there).

Note: Transmissions with no dipstick often have no transmission drain plug either. When it is time to change the transmission fluid you should also change the filter(s) and for that you need to remove the pan. Problem is that you have to SLOWLY remove the pan screws (bolts) so you can control where the fluid runs out or you will have a nice big mess to clean up. (remember to buy a new pan gasket along with filter(s) before starting the job).

Camran,

After 20-30 minutes of driving, its hot enough to check. Yes, on a level surface, car in park, engine still running, pull the dipstick and see where its at. If between the two lines, you are good. If below the bottom line, need to add. But don't add too much at a time...for example, I recently checked and my one car was at the bottom line so I decided to "top it off". I think I only had to add 2-3 ounces to get it to the top line, which isn't much at all. Underfilled isn't good, but neither is overfilled.

Markus- When hot on level ground; should the engine be running in park? Does it have to be really hot; what I mean is after a long trip or as long as it is running at a normal temp (say after 20 miles)? Does it make sense to run the shilt lever through all the gears?

Thanks,
Camran

When hot, parked on a level surface, fluid should be between those two lines.
