Gary,

The burning wire insulation smell could also be the blower fan if the
strip fuse did not blow as it should have. If the fan was powered but
frozen in place that would be more than enough current to melt the
wiring. You whole system needs to be gone over now to get at the short.

You best have things looked at unless you are prepared to tear down
portions of the dash.
