dick you said the control button thingy was going out....well yesterday the a/c completely shut down.  no air...doesn't even turn on.   unknowningly i left the a/c button on and a few miles into my drive i started to smell that electrical wire burn so i turned the a/c off.  the smell went away.   so its has to be the push button control?   the following is what you wrote.

"Sure sounds like the push button control is going south or the vacuum switching valve is failing.  You can test the vacuum switching valve after removing pass side carpet and lifting the acc pushbutton wood trim forward.  Need a mighty vac to test each vacuuum lead to the pods in the dash.  Honestly, if the pods are original, you should rebuild them.  The mighty vac will tell you which ones are already leaking easily.  Not so bad if you are operating an SEC with no air bags.  If air bags, yeah it's a bit of effort to get to certain of them.

If you are hearing any clicking from this area when the valves are moving the air all over the place, it is the pushbutton control.  Rebuilt with 3yr warranty available for $150-175 depending on where you source it.  Requires you test with a meter both the mono-valve and aux heater pumps for shorts or grounds before putting new unit in place or warranty is void."
