I had that endless cranking problem one day. My 380 stalled out in front of my driveway and when I tried to restart it it would crank but not start. After several tries the endless cranking started, I pulled the keys out and it kept cranking, for about 3 or more mins.....finally it stopped, I fried the starter. I didn't have sense enough to pull the battery cable off. The mechanic replaced the rebuilt starter recently so he replace this one for free, but apparently the Ignition Control Module was bad.

Thanks guys! Some great suggestions here! Too bad about that train though.

Subject: [W126 Coupe] 500SEC engine/starter question
If anyone can lend any ideas here, it would be much appreciated.
After installing the "new" engine in my SEC, I finally went to turn it
over a bit to pump some oil up into the engine, and ATF through the
tranny plumbing.
While renewing the engine before reinstalling it, I installed a rebuilt
starter. The new starter differs slightly from the old starter in the
terminal arrangement, in that it has two smaller terminals slightly
separated from each other, rather than the two terminals that were only
separated by a plastic divider on the old starter.
At first, the starter wouldn't respond, so I switched the terminal on it
for the solenoid control wire, at which point it wouldn't stop once I
jumpered it at the terminal block.
Once I had interrupted the endless cranking by removing the battery
terminal, I am now scratching my head trying to figure out what went
wrong. I can't seem to find a good wiring diagram to reference as to
which terminal on the terminal row should have power, switched power, or
start only power. Currently, all the terminals appear to be connected
to B+, even when the ignition is off.
I decided that it was time to take a break and think on this some more,
while not staring at it.
Any ideas on what I managed to mess up in hooking it up?

Is your neutral safety switch OK/set up properly?

Well, I never altered the neutral safety switch, so I hope it's still
set properly... I'll have to go check, but I never changed anything
down there, other than disconnecting and reconnecting when R&Ring the
engine/tranny.
Now that I've had some time to think, I'm leaning toward thinking that
I've somehow gotten battery power applied to the starter control wire in
the main vehicle harness, not the section that jumps from the fender to
the starter. When I unscrewed the rear terminal and pulled the starter
solenoid wire out of the set, there was still continuity to B+ present
on the other violet/white wires that it shares that terminal with.
