[W126 Coupe] SEC engine/transmission question

Marcus,
Both are out of the car.
Following the instructions I'd found prior to posting, I stood the
transmission up on end, and with the spare ring gear loosely attached to
it as a handle, placed the torque converter down onto the input shaft.
Spinning it back and forth usually got it to drop down onto the
transmission, but apparently it's not mating up fully, as I end up
approximately 1/4" from the bell housing meeting up with the rear of the
engine, when the torque converter and the flexplate have already met.
(and yes, I had taken the extra ring gear off prior to trying to mate
the engine and transmission...)

Jonathan,
Where is that plastic plug meant to line up on the torque converter? In
line with the weld seam? I see the hole that is described in the
manual where the plug should be, but I didn't know it was there when I
went to take mine apart, and broke the little plastic thing. The other
transmission didn't have one to start with.

I'm guessing that the last step, the pump notches, is what is causing me
so much grief, especially since they look to be just about 1/4".

Thanks for the suggestions and comments, both of you.
-Josh
