[W126 Coupe] rims

My guess is that back in the 80's, early 90's, there wasn't much available in 18's. 

My SEC had 18" rims on it and they were great!! I moved those rims over to the 560SEL and they're still great. BUT..... I'm using "H" rated tires on there, not "Z" rated tires with the super stiff sidewalls. Both cars are lowered, therefore stiffer, still with a fine ride. You want "air-cushion" ride like a Caddy, this is not the setup to use. You want a good ride and great handling, 18" rims will do just fine, with the right tires on them. YMMV

  IMHO, 18"s don't offer enough sidewall on the tires to absorb rough road surfaces, so they don't have anywhere near the original MB ride quality. Also the W126's suspension wasn't designed to handle the larger size. There had to be a reason that AMG originally only made 17"s to fit.
