[W126 Coupe] spark plugs

Yes, Jonathan, as a result of following previous discussions on timing chains, I did use MB parts ie: chain, tensioner, guides, oil clips etc (all but the bottom guides, that were perfect, I guess because being imersed in oil all the time)

I'll try the 20W50, as I drive only domestic cars in the winter.

My Nephew tried to switch to 5W30 Synthetic on his W140 S500 "Dual distributor engine" with 150,000 KM on the clock. He did this in the summer with temperatures on the high side.

It was diagnosed that the new oil was causing the ticking noise that developed (wasn't there before changing oils) He changed back to 15W40 dino and the noise disappeared. Don't know if it was the thinner oil or the synthetic that caused it.

I'd argue that a lower first number in the oil is better than higher, such as 0W or 5W. Why? Because it is the "thickness" of the oil when starting cold, versus the second number which is the "thickness" when warm. There's been lots of research on this and I've been seeing manufacturers offer products with the lower starting numbers as well. It is supposed to greatly help with the first time you start the car where the majority of wear and tear on the motor happens anyway since no oil in the engine - so the faster it can flow and get to pressure the better. Don't believe me? Well, I use 5W-40 in the Benzes, and 0W-30 in my Fords. Amazing how fast that oil pressure gauge goes up in the winter when first starting the car. Or, take a bottle of dino 20W-50 vs. synthetic 0W-30 or 5W-40 at 30 degrees and see how each one flows out of the bottle.

Not trying to start a debate here, and I know there are those that swear by their oil....but my method has me driving a 22 year old car as a daily driver, and my wife drives her 13 year old Ford with over 150K, no engine work whatsoever.

Ronny,

I run 20/50 year round be it synthetic or dino.

Depending on the conditions you drive, 5K should be fine on syn. unless you are putting the car under heavy load/through extreme conditions.

Jonathan,
I followed your discussion. You mentioned it is better to use 20/50 oil.
Is that just the normal oil? I use for my cars only full synthetic oil and change it every 5,000 miles.

Hello Bill,

Yes, All M116/117's need the same looking after in regards to the timing chain/tensioner/guide rails/oil line clips. Aside from getting the job done it is of Utmost importance to use Genuine guides as well as a Genuine tensioner.

15/40 is good, you may find 20/50 even better. For off the shelf oil that still meets the needs of our engines (re, zinc/phosphate etc..) I've been using Valvoline Racing 20/50.

Shrouding is what happens when you have Large amounts of deposits forming on your spark plugs..to the point where they cover the electrode and form an actual cover/shroud over the tip.

Hi Jonathan,

We just did a timing chain (172,00KM)(108,000 Miles) and she will be re-assembled shortly, I was interested to see what shape the chain/tensioner etc, was in.(fear of the unknown)

The chain showed some wear (minor) the rest of it showed very little wear (pleasently surprised, as per the lists dialogue over the years) (replaced everything anyway), I believe that the car has had an easy life, judging by the engine internals, and by the history that I got when I imported the car from Germany in 2000 and the service by me since then.

The plugs look good after 15,000 km (since the last change) (light brown and with no oil deposits appearing)

Question ... I have a 1990 560 SEL (US) as well, with similar mileage, (milage is accurate) with regular service by MB since new. Does the timing chain and their components wear the same as on a 1995 euro 500 ? should I assume that the chain needs attention ?

I use Castrol 15W40 and change every 5000 KM. (in the winter they are both garage queens)

What is shrouding ??

Hello Bill,

I would just keep an eye on your plugs..If when you inspect them you are starting to see deposits form then I'd make the switch to the BP5's. Also, if it gets Really bad close the gap down to about .028-.030. That will help prevent shrouding etc.

What weight oil are you running? How many k's since your last oil change?

Jonathan,

At what mileage or kilometer reading should one choose NGK BP5ES (for tired valve guides) ?? My 85 500 SEC euro is starting to puff smoke (1 or 2 seconds) at startup, when sitting overnight only.
