Andy and Dr H -

If you have a 1480, then you probably have an early MY 1991 SEC. And
you are correct Andy, with a 1480, it is a single, all-in-one unit in
the dash (tuner/receiver/cassette player plus the two amps behind the
seat).

If the car is a later MY 1991 SEC, it will have a 1432, a two-unit set-
up, which has the cassette player in the dash unit and the tuner/
receiver in the trunk unit (right side). Depending on which sound
system is installed, there will also be one or two full range
amplifiers. I'm not sure where the amps are on the S-class in this
case; on the E-class they are next to the tuner/receiver (in the trunk).

Mercedes did not always change radio models at the exact same time
that they changed Model Year (MY). The 1432 seems to be quite an
improvement over the 1480 in sound quality (I've had both), so yes, Dr
H, if that is what you have, it may be worth getting an overhaul.
